"So how are you?" Lucas asked.

"I've been better."

Two hours later, I was sitting in an Italian cafe bar. Lucas had texted me and asked if I'd meet him for a coffee.

"Thanks for agreeing to meet me," he said.

"It's not like I've got many people sticking up for me right now."

"What about Lance?"

"My marriage is hanging by a tight thread."

Sympathy crossed his face. "He should support you."

"Lance thinks I'm overreacting. But, I know Stephanie is trying to ruin my life."

“I knew there was something weird about her,” Lucas said. “ I could never put my finger on it.”

“You and Jackie both. I wish I’d listened.”

Lucas looked thoughtful for a moment. Then he took a deep breath.

"Look, I've got a friend," he whispered." He lives in London. I could arrange for you to go and stay with him until you get yourself sorted out."

I rubbed the back of my neck. "What? That's insane. What about Rosie?"

"Take with her with you. I could come, too," Lucas added hopefully.

My body froze momentarily. "Now, what are you saying?"

"This could be a fresh start."

"Who for? You and me?"

"I care about you. To be honest, I never stopped loving you."

"Lucas," I muttered, utterly speechless. "We're colleagues. I'm married with a baby. I can't just uproot my life."

Why not?"

"Because I can't. Lance would find me."

"Do you feel the same about me?"

I went still. "What we had was good, but it was a long time ago. Running away is not the answer."

Lucas fumbled for words and stretched his hand across the table until he touched mine. "You're scared. I get that. But I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't mean it."

"What? You'd take Rosie too? Another man's child?"

"She's a part of you."

"This is insane. You are insane."

"Only about you. I still love you."

"I can't."

"But you want to."

"I don't know. What about your job? Are you just going to leave?"

Lucas's shoulders dropped. "Let me worry about that. I'll call my friend."

I shook my head. "No, don't do that. I’m sorry, Lucas. I’m here because I need a friend. That’s all.”
