Grow a Healthy Heart

“Your heart pumps blood into the rivers of blood vessels that flow all through your body. The blood delivers energy for you to play and food for you to grow. Think of your blood vessels as rivers and creeks. When you dump garbage in rivers, the water gets muddy and dirty. When you eat junk food, you dump garbage into your blood vessels. Look at the picture below of a blood vessel from a person who ate too much junk food. When the junk food gets into your blood, it acts like sticky stuff or like the garbage in a muddy river. Over many years this sticky stuff piles up, like junk piles up on river banks, and makes the blood flow more slowly, so you don’t get enough energy in your body to think smart, run fast, or play soccer well.

“Now look at the arteries of a child who ate grow foods, like fruits, veggies, fish, greens, and beans. This child has blood like clean rivers and arteries like a Slip ’N Slide.

“Which arteries do you want to have?”

Once your child understands the concept of how grow foods create smooth arteries, and junk foods dump sticky stuff, like pollution, into these “rivers,” go to the next lesson.

“Once upon a time, even doctors thought our blood vessels were just like a rubber hose: Blood comes in one end and goes out the other, and nothing else happens. Now we know that the lining of our blood vessels [point to the picture] has millions of magical glands, like tiny squirt bottles. These glands make magical juices from your body’s own chemistry set that squirt smart medicines into the rivers of your bloodstream to make you smart and strong. But if you eat lots of junk food, that sticky stuff piles up and damages these tiny squirt bottles, so they can’t work. When Dr. Bill tells you he wants you to muster up your own internal medicine, such as for your ADD, this is what he means. This is where your internal medicine comes from. That’s why we have to feed the lining of our arteries right.
