Instead of pursuing a “sacred ritual” where the entire analysis revolves around the central hypothesis, the Process Method lets hypotheses evolve out of the data that have been collected, as the nature of the relationships begin to take shape during the analysis. Thus, the Process Method does not exclude the testing of hypotheses, but they are not central to the analysis (Wilkie 1974).

The advancement of the systems science view (top down, from general to specific) is one of the major developments in science of our time, but more often it is sidelined while RMM science, its immediate practical effectiveness unquestioned, maintains a grip on scientific authority. This strong position guarantees grant money, which then drives scientific agendas and sustains a feedback loop that discourages change.13 Urgent contemporary issues such as the importance of the microbiome to body and mind, the degradation of ecological systems, and the existential crisis of anthropogenic climate change, however, are topics now forcing a broader view of the interconnectedness of nature because these are problems that are not easily reducible to parts. Issues such as these, which fall into the domain of systems science and require multidisciplinary cooperation, haven’t always received adequate support from the larger scientific institutions, though this is changing. The above problems, which have strong links to social issues such as socioeconomic disparities, gender equality, and overall quality of life, challenge how humans relate to nature and expose the shortcomings and assumptions of purist RMM science. I am generally hopeful about the future, however, as I see science, in the broadest sense, as an evolving social activity that experiences occasional paradigm shifts. With the possible exception of a global pandemic of authoritarianism and idiocracy, mainstream science will eventually be forced to shift, not completely away from reductionism, but to refine it and use it where appropriate. When studying complex systems, the scientific establishment will, hopefully, eventually come to allow systems science methodologies to first establish perspectives and then guide further experimentation using standard or adapted reductionism. RMM science is not wrong, it just has its limits and can easily make a mess of things when practitioners are myopic and overconfident.
