The first is an answer that refers only to physical processes. It is typical of maps supplied by science. The second doesn’t deny those processes but instead focuses on their ultimate cause, purpose and meaning. It resembles the map religion gives us. Both are making truth claims about the same kettle. But they are completely compatible. As Polkinghorne comments:

We need the insights of both science and religion in our quest for understanding. Science is essentially asking, and answering, the question “How?” By what manner of means do things come about? Religion, essentially, is asking and answering the question “Why?” Is there a meaning and purpose at work behind what is happening? We need to address both these questions if we’re to understand what is going on.7

Richard Dawkins, by contrast with Polkinghorne, admits that based on his one-map scientific perspective, “What is the purpose of the universe?” is “a silly question” with no answer. Science is simply incapable of addressing this or many other vital questions of human existence.
