Chapter 12: The Truth Is Revealed

About ten minutes had elapsed before they saw the two crooks leave the maze and make their way back to the manor. Once they had disappeared from sight, Joe looked at the others. “Let’s try to speak to Quigley again. When I was looking around earlier, I saw a ladder in the shed by the garage, so let’s hide the jewellery somewhere close by and then go and get the ladder. If we can put that up against the wall and knock on the window, we might even able be able rescue him and William.”

“Okay, let’s do that.” Will looked around until he found a prickly bush and, after dumping the cloth bag into the middle of it, he followed the others to the shed.

Once they were sure that none of the men could see them, they hurried over to the building and the boys quickly entered while the girls kept watch. Half a minute later, the boys emerged with the ladder.

With all four of them helping, it didn’t take long to manoeuvre the ladder directly below the window that led to the locked room. It just reached.

“Shall I go up the ladder and tell Quigley the good news about the jewellery?” Joe asked.

“Okay,” Will replied. “We’ll keep watch.”

Joe nodded and hurried up the ladder. Once he reached the window, which was now closed, he tapped on it. He peered through the window and looked around the bedroom. He couldn’t see any sign of Quigley, but he saw William standing on the far side of the room.

As the man walked towards him, Joe tapped harder on the windowpane and called out. “Open the window!”

William paused for a moment before he strolled over and flung open the window.

“We found the jewellery!” Joe blurted out.

“You did what?” William exclaimed.

“We found the cloth bag with the jewellery in it.” Joe glanced around the room. “Where’s Quigley?”

“One of the men took him away somewhere,” William replied. “But talking about the jewellery, where is it now?”

“We hid it in a bush in the landscaped garden,” Joe replied.

“Can you show me where it is?” William questioned. “I’m eager to get my hands on it once more.”

Joe nodded. “But then will you help us find Quigley?”

“Yes, of course,” William replied.

Joe climbed down the ladder closely followed by the man. Then, with the boy leading the way, the group hurried back to the landscaped garden. Once there, Joe reached inside the prickly bush where the bag had been hidden and handed it to the man.

William smiled as he peered inside the cloth bag. “Is it all here?”

“This is how we found it,” Will stated.

“Yes, of course.” William closed the bag and looked at the children. “Let’s find your friend.”

The group walked back to the manor. However, they’d just passed the middle of the landscaped garden when they heard footsteps and a man emerged from the grotto.

The children stared in shock. The man that was in front of them was exactly like William. He was bald, was the same height, the same round face and the same brown eyes.
