ACTION POINTS
Can you identify a motive, attitude, thought, word, or action that is currently keeping you from success?
Does your self talk fill your life with faith or doubt?
How will you allow your Big Five to work for you and not against you?
WHAT ACTION ARE you taking each day to change your self talk? How are you investing in your life by changing your self talk? The only resource for victory in our minds is offered through biblical truth. This is where we will find help for our self talk.
One way to gain biblical truth is by meditating on God’s Word. When the Bible talks about meditating on the Word, it doesn’t mean some type of incantations or some lotus posture. When God mentions meditating on His Word, He doesn’t mean chanting “omm” and emptying our minds to reach nirvana. That’s mysticism.
Meditating on the Word of God simply means bringing our thoughts, motives, attitudes, words, and actions to God. Meditating means we quietly ponder, think about, or reflect on what God has done through His Son, Jesus Christ. We monitor our thoughts because our thoughts can become our words, our words become our actions, our actions become our habits, our habits become our characters, and our character becomes our destiny.
The woman with the hemorrhaging condition, mentioned in Mark 5 and discussed in the last chapter had an extraordinary faith. Her faith did not come from psyching herself up. She didn’t tell herself, “I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.” No, it wasn’t about psyching herself up. She had a deep conviction inside of her about God’s grace and goodness. She heard about Jesus. That strong, deep conviction so persuaded her, so convinced her, that she spoke to her self, and her motives and thoughts led her into her actions. It would have been easy for her to get discouraged. The unsympathetic reactions of the people reminded her that she was an outcast and should not be in public. She might have wanted to leave, but she kept telling herself over and over again, “If I can just touch Him, I will be cured.”
Truthful self talk has maintenance value to us. In other words, as we have truthful self talk, based on God’s Word, it builds in us a maintenance value, so that when we find ourselves in difficulty, we can go back and remember what God has done. Like the woman who touched Jesus’s robe, we can continue to speak encouragement to ourselves: “If I keep going to church, if I keep doing what’s right, if I keep standing on the promise, if I hold true to what God says . . .I’m going to get through this.” That’s what the psalmist did in Psalm 42. He kept reminding himself, “I remember when I went to the temple. I remember how much joy I had. I remember how I led the singing.” Our hope is in God. That has maintenance value to us.
Begin by trusting God in the small areas of life.
