DON’T QUIT
Books, paper, gadgets, keepsakes, cars, and houses are typically some of the toughest areas for people to minimize. In these areas, we think we’ve got a good reason for holding on to what we’ve got. If we give them up, we wonder, aren’t we giving up something important?
Actually, we’re giving up something important if we don’t do the hard work of minimizing in these areas. We’re giving up the freedom to be able to fully live the life we want. That’s the real dream, and it’s worth whatever sacrifices we need to make it our reality.
So my final word to you as you turn to face the tough spots for decluttering in your home is this: don’t quit.
Years ago, I almost quit writing about minimalism. I had blogged for almost one year and had seen some growth on the site, but nothing too exciting. And so, in February 2009, I simply stopped writing. It was not necessarily a “Nobody reads my blog, I quit!” mentality. Instead, other things started to get in the way. Blogging was pushed to the back of my mind, and I no longer set aside time specifically for it.
My blog — now so much a part of my life — might have faded into digital blackness if it hadn’t been for a radio commercial aired on the evening of March 3, 2009.
While driving my car to attend a conference in Massachusetts, I heard on the radio an announcement that a furniture store was collecting old prom dresses to donate to teenagers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them. I thought the idea was genius. I still get emotional thinking about teenage girls with no resources being given beautiful dresses for their prom night.
So I returned to my blog with a short post encouraging people to donate old prom dresses. It was my first post in weeks.
Within moments of publishing the post, Christy, a woman I had never met, left a comment: “Come back, Josh.” She had been reading my blog from near the beginning, finding inspiration in the ideas, and now she was encouraging me to continue.
Her comment was short. Three words total. But it was encouraging enough for me to carry on with writing and blogging about minimalism. I decided to persevere. I’m so glad I did, because I’ve found that writing and speaking about the joys of minimalism are part of my purpose and calling.
I know minimalism can be difficult at times. Decluttering a home is both physically exhausting and emotionally draining. A million other things that you could be doing will surface — and you can easily move minimalism to the back burner of life.
But the greatest lessons in life take time and effort. Few people get them right the first time.
In those moments when you want to quit, draw upon the essential life discipline of perseverance. Because you will never reach your fullest potential until you learn to push through the frustration, no matter how difficult your circumstances may be.
Let me offer you a short comment of encouragement: You can do it! I know you can.
