Islar was the same as I remembered, quaint buildings peeking up over the hills we traveled, the shining river behind them. My heart ached a bit, but I knew we were here for good reason.

Ainsley brightened as soon as she saw the rooftops, and I giggled as she urged her horse forward just a bit faster. The buildings grew closer together the further we rode into town, and we left our horses tied in a public stable on the outskirts.

The sun was shining brightly, its warmth chasing away the winter chill in the air. I bundled my cloak tighter around my body, practically vibrating as Cal wrapped me in his arms.

“The townspeople might recognize us,” I whispered, watching as the rest of the group tied neat knots in the horses’ leads and unloaded their packs from the beasts’ backs. “Avan!” I waved him over quickly. If anyone would know a disguising spell, it would be the trickster.

“Yes, sweetheart?” His eyes promised heat we couldn’t fulfill, and a phantom finger trickled up my spine as I squirmed in Cal’s arms until his wandering hands rubbed along my arms to still me.

“Quit that,” I growled at Avan, his responding chuckle telling me he knew exactly what his eyes promised. “Do you know of a way to travel through town without recognition?”

Avan hummed, tilting his head side to side as he thought. Eventually, he shook his head, only to turn and whistle towards Ian, inclining his head toward our small group. “I don’t, but Ian might. Tricky witch.”

As Ian sidled up next to Avan, their warm bodies circling around me, and Avan’s promises lacing through my entire body, lighting up the bonds between us. I couldn’t help but groan softly at the thought of our bodies together like this, and as I did, each male gaze snapped to me, desire mirrored in their eyes.

Avan turned to explain my request to Ian, his eyes never leaving mine. Ian brightened, a salacious grin spreading across his lips as he grabbed my hands.

“You are a bright little thing, aren’t you, Briar?” he murmured against my knuckles.

Magic above, they all needed to quit. I could only take so much.

Ian quickly explained the spell, weaving my hands with his as he showed me how to wave them over each person. I reached within myself, pulling and plucking at my magic until the starry shadows eclipsed each person, slightly morphing our features until we could blend in without drawing any attention.

Our steps were quick as we made our way down the streets, Ainsley a bit ahead of our group as she turned down each street with expert ease. She cut through a familiar courtyard, stopping in front of a darkened shopfront, cobwebs decorating the display window. My heart broke as I stopped next to her and peered into my dress shop. The forms were the same, the same draping silk I’d been working on when Ian worked his spell attached to a form near the back.

Ainsley’s hand enveloped mine as Jonas laid his head against my shoulder.
