What kills high intensity

Before adding anything to a training program, we must evaluate all aspects of the environment so that we are not simply adding for the sake of it. Bruce Lee called it “Hacking at the inessential”. It is one thing to identify the importance of recovery and sustainability in the modern game, but it is another thing to improve it. Players are habitual and they practice how they play. Many aspects of traditional coaching make it difficult to implement and below are just a few of these.

Training inside the physical comfort zone – Exercises and sessions must be physically challenging enough to get all players towards their maximum energy expenditure. The 2v2 exercise below, where two attackers in white go against two attackers in black, is a prime example. The exercise takes place inside a 20x20 yard area, and the same attacking and defensive movements are being made over and over again. Players have been doing exercises like this since they started playing the game and, although it can be a good teaching tool for basic playing principles, the movement required on both sides of the ball are second nature by the time they reach a competitive level. As a result, the challenge level is normally too low for players to be pushed at their maximum both physically and technically.
