Proving My Worth

January 2, 2010, the Ike departed Naval Station Norfolk for the second of our two scheduled Middle East deployments. Saying goodbye that time was no easier than it was the first, especially now that Robert seemed to be growing faster and faster. I put the thought of missing out on moments with him in the back of my mind. I knew they would be there throughout the next six months, but things would get easier as I got into my daily routine. For this deployment, my goal was to get through it with patience and walk off the boat having grown and matured. I did not want to come back the same; I planned to return stronger.

After passing the test for petty officer third class, I was promoted to LS3. The navy merged two rates together, my previous rate of SK and Postal Clerk (PC), and they formed Logistics Specialist (LS). My job functions and duties within the squadron were still the same, the only change was the title. Within the command I was exceeding expectations and while I had no specific goals for my career, I knew rank was the one thing that gave me options. And I was happy to finally have some.
