2. MAÎTRE SIMON, HARPAGON. CLÉANTE, LA FLÈCHE, standing to one side.

MAÎTRE SIMON. That’s right, sir, a young man in need of money, extremely urgently. He’ll agree to any terms you offer.

HARPAGON. Maître Simon, what risk would I be running? What’s his name, who’s his family, how valuable are their assets?

MAÎTRE SIMON. I don’t know very much. He came my way by chance. I’m sure he’ll supply the details. However, his man was most reassuring. It seems that he comes from a wealthy family, that the mother has passed away, and that the father will probably pop off too, in around eight months’ time.

HARPAGON. That sounds promising. Our duty to our fellow creatures, Maître Simon, demands that we help them whenever possible.

MAÎTRE SIMON. Absolutely.

LA FLÈCHE (aside, to CLÉANTE). What’s this? Maître Simon talking to your father?

CLÉANTE (aside, to LA FLÈCHE). Has he been told who I am? Is this your doing?

MAÎTRE SIMON (to CLÉANTE and LA FLÈCHE). You were quick! How did you know this was the place we were meeting at? (To HARPAGON.) It wasn’t me, sir, revealed your name and address, honestly. But no harm’s been done. They’re the soul of discretion, so you can talk freely.

HARPAGON. What’s this?

MAÎTRE SIMON. Here’s the gentleman who wishes to borrow fifteen thousand francs.

HARPAGON. You? You! You’re the waster who’s going to these disgraceful lengths?

CLÉANTE. My own father, a squalid crook!

MAÎTRE SIMON and LA FLÈCHE exit.
