THE NIGHT WAS STILL young when Graham said goodbye to Dr. Delph. A nearly-full moon peeked over the roof of the welcome center that sat between Orpheus House and the town square, and as Graham circled the block, he heard guitar music echo from the open-air pavilion where the townsfolk liked to gather. Even Spero Heights was lively on Saturday night.

Graham tucked his hands into the pockets of his slacks. He felt naked without his leather duster and, despite the summer heat, couldn’t wait to replace it. The businesses east of town square were run mainly by day walkers—all except for a vampire locksmith, though he was by appointment only on the weekends. The west side of the square was brighter and louder, with the Crimson Moon, the local werewolf bar, in full swing.

Graham opted for the quiet sidewalk. He didn’t stalk about or try to go unnoticed, but he was also eager to reach his destination without too many interruptions. A faerie child spinning in circles on the lawn outside the pavilion stopped to wave.

Graham smiled and waved back, quickening his pace before the kid alerted the crowd. There would be time to catch up with everyone soon enough. Dr. Delph would not be sending him out to chase down the forsaken any time soon—certainly not until this situation with Eliza was resolved.

For a mayor, Graham was curiously absent much of the time. But the citizens of Spero Heights didn’t come here to be lorded over by the likes of him, and the ones that did require more care and attention usually needed the variety Dr. Delph offered at Orpheus House. If they became unruly, then the task fell to Selena.

Graham had the bankroll to get the town up and running. Beyond that, he saw himself as a gopher. An errand boy of the Fates who saved those they perceived as worthy via the personal broadcasts they shared with Dr. Delph. That Graham himself had been their first salvage still perplexed him.

He was nothing special, beyond his many years. And if he was being honest with himself, he knew he didn’t deserve the redemption they had offered—if that was in fact their intent. The Fates rarely spelled things out so clearly. Graham often wondered if they had chosen him simply because he was the most able and willing to take on the challenge of saving the broken creatures they took pity on. He had plenty of wrongs he could never make right, no matter how badly he wanted to. What better pawn could they have hoped for?

Once Graham passed the town square, his stride relaxed. The town’s crown jewel, the cheese factory loomed proudly to his right. The building’s renovation had been one of his first challenges after he’d purchased the plot of cursed land.

He’d inherited a small sum of money after his sire’s passing, and over the years, the interest had compounded until he was left with enough to do something real. He wasn’t a billionaire by any means, but he knew if he could cut a deal, he’d make the money stretch as far as it needed to.
