The happiest people in our interviews were willing to change, or distance themselves from, negative relationships like those with difficult relatives, friends, or colleagues, only seeing them in group settings. One interviewee told us that a woman in her morning walking group dominated conversations, griping about her husband at a level that the interviewee found uncomfortable to listen to. Eventually she started feigning scheduling challenges and instead met a couple of the members for one-on-one walks on weekends. Repeatedly we found that those who were able to disconnect from an unbearable source of microstress were happier. We interviewed people who left jobs, selectively turned down promotions that would come with reporting to a difficult boss, let go of friendships because of excess drama or negativity, and moved away from colleagues whom they loved but who caused them too much work. And they all retrospectively said it was absolutely the right thing to do.
