Defence against Aircraft (including Balloons)
A.M.D.I. 8.âRules for Opening Fire on AircraftâMethod of Approach of Friendly Aircraft (T.D. 669/42.)
1. Masters should ensure that defence personnel are trained and practised in aircraft recognition. Every endeavour must be made to recognize approaching aircraft.
2. At Sea:â
(a) Except as directed in sub-paragraphs (d) and (e) below, merchant ships and fishing vessels at sea are free to engage any aircraft not recognized as friendly which approaches within 1,500 yards.
It is vitally important that, once an unidentified aircraft is within this range, there should be no hesitation in opening fire.
(b) Any aircraft clearly recognized by its appearance or actions to be hostile may be engaged by suitable weapons at a greater range than 1,500 yards.
Subject to using only shell set to burst at 1,500 yards or less, fire may be opened on aircraft whilst still outside this range if suspected of being hostile, even though not clearly recognized as such. This will not endanger friendly aircraft, who are instructed not to approach within this range.
(c) Merchant ships and fishing vessels are not to open fire with guns or other weapons on unseen aircraft (e.g., they are not to open fire on sound or if aircraft is obscured by smoke screen).
(d) In the following areas, merchant ships are not to open fire on aircraft unless actually attacked :â
Atlantic Ocean .. (i) When westward of 36° West and northward of 25° North, or
(ii) When southward of 25° North.
