Meditation Vacation. Sit either in a chair or cross-legged on the floor. Try to keep your back straight and your head, neck, and chest in a line. If you sit on a couple of pillows, it will help keep your knees down and roll your hips slightly forward. Rest your hands on your upper thighs, palms up. Close your eyes and focus inwardly on a spot between your eyebrows. Breathe normally, remaining aware of your breath and focused on that spot. The challenge is to ignore the mind wandering—Did I mail that check? I hate my boss. Who’s driving carpool? I’m worried about tomorrow’s meeting…. If you are thinking, you are not meditating. Even thinking about not thinking is a no-no. You can’t stop thoughts from entering your mind, but you can let them sail on by. Don’t grab them, consider them, or start problem solving. Simply acknowledge these fleeting thoughts on the outskirts of your mind, like traffic noise, remaining focused on your breathing and the spot behind your eyes. Practice this for five minutes, gradually building to ten as it gets easier.
