By this time, my second year of high school was well under way and, to escape the melodrama at home, I was developing my first intense involvements outside la familia. Wilhelm Lugar had offered to tutor me in English after we had formally met at his presentation to our English club. He had shown slides of all the European and American cities where he and his family had lived, and I had had the chance to show off my knowledge of facts about those places—up to the letter M that is. He had laughed after class when I told him why I had not commented on Paris or Palermo. He said he looked forward to talking with me after I got past the S’s, as in sexy, in the Britannica. I took it as an invitation to meet again.
