SATURDAY MORNING

It was barely 8 am when the phone rang next to Kate’s bedside table. She rubbed her eyes and stared at the jangling phone for a moment before she got her wits about her. She reached over the pillows and grabbed the sleek white receiver then laid back down.

“Hello?” Her voice was husky from sleep.

“Miss Kate, it is Lt. Roach,” James’s voice informed her.

“Thank you, James. I will take it.” Kate waited to hear the click before beginning. “Casey! Why are you calling so early?”

“I wanted to share a piece of information with you before I stopped over at the Martins.”

“I hope it is important. I was having a very nice dream.”

“It may be a very odd coincidence, but maybe not. Since you and Betty are so involved, I thought your advice would be appreciated.”

Kate sat up and swallowed hard. “Well, if I can give you any advice, I would love to!” She put her fingers through her shoulder length curls, as if to look a little better. Then she snuggled into the pillows, again.

“I had to step into the office this morning. There was a note on my desk. It was from Jonathan, the maître d’ at the Grove.”

“What was so important?”

“You know the Grove is not known for its honesty in business, right?”

“I read the papers, Casey!”

“Well, it seems that, by sheer coincidence,” Casey coughed. “Tony was offered the job at the Grove the day after the murder.”

“I can see that. He said he was looking for jobs when we went to his place, asking questions.”

“But that is not all. Jonathan says Mr. Milton called Barney Welansky, the owner, asking him to quickly find a place for a kid. Jonathan says that Milton and Welansky have some ties. The kid is Tony Greco.”

Kate bolted upright.. “Oh, my! That is quite a coincidence!”

“So, you just answered my question. Thanks, Kate. I am on my way over to the Miltons, now.”

“Casey!” Kate’s throat was tight. “Be safe, please. This is a little scary.”

“Don’t worry about me, Kate. Talk to you soon.” Casey hung up on his end. Kate just looked at her receiver and bit her lower lip.

After a few moments, Kate hung up and got out of bed. She put on a dressing gown and brushed her hair. She opened the door and went down the hall to Betty’s room. Knocking softly, she walked into the room. Betty was already awake, sitting up in bed with arms folded.

“Who calls the house at 8am on a Saturday?” Betty complained.

“It was Casey.”

“Why?”

“Jonathan, the maitre d’ at the Grove called the police station looking for Casey. Someone wrote out a note for him and put it on Casey’s desk. Apparently, Mr. Milton knows Barney Welansky. And,” Kate dropped her voice. “He asked for a favor from Welansky! He wanted a kid to get a job, immediately. That kid is Tony!”

“That is a little too coincidental, don’t you think?” Betty’s eyes got wide.

“That’s what I said.”

“Do you think his telling you all this is illegal? What is Casey going to do?”

“No.
