Loss of Proprioception

The Patient is lying flat on his back.

PatientI’ve lost all the sensation of my body. My head moves, but from my neck to my feet I can’t feel my body any more. If I don’t look at it, I don’t know it’s there, it’s as though it doesn’t exist. The doctors explain to me that I’m not paralysed. They say I’ve lost my proprioception:

Turned every two hours like a piece of meat

Bathed with lotion

Unmoving like a statue

Mind filled with emotion

Limbs dead to the touch

Movement impossible

Lying on a bed

Eyes fixed on the flaking ceiling

Wishing those flakes would turn to cracks

And the ceiling fall

To take me from that misery

What’s the use of an active brain

Without mobility?
