Chapter Twenty-One

After the most delicious tart he’d ever eaten, Adam kissed Natalia senseless and made his escape. It was perhaps the hardest thing he’d ever done, leaving her waving at the door while he drove away into the night. Being a gentleman was not easy.

Warmth filled his chest and he cranked up the music. Despite the unfortunate punch-up with Harry, he’d never had a better evening. Every time he learned something new about Natalia, she surprised him even more. Because somehow, he, the rebellious bad boy trying to make good, was dating a beautiful, prim, and proper bad girl.

He blew out his breath. Natalia was damn perfect, but hell if he knew why she was standing by him. He was grateful though, and as the tempting woman had laid her warm body alongside his and nursed his wounds, a strange hot sensation had filled him from head to toe.

How would he ever be worthy of her? He wanted to be. He never wanted to let her go. But he wanted to move slowly, and it was obviously what Natalia needed too. Because even though she had a good sense of who she was and what she wanted, the insecurities and vulnerability she hid so well continued to lurk. The sexual harassment she’d experienced had not been kind on her soul.

His hand tightened around the wheel as he recalled the insult that had come out of Harry’s mouth. Hot piece of arse. Not dating her for her brain. If Jack and Liam hadn’t been holding him back, he’d have punched Harrison again. No wonder Natalia was sensitive about her looks when that’s the type of talk she’d experienced. She may have shrugged it off on the outside, but he’d seen the hurt in her eyes.

What had Natalia been through? Sure, he understood why she hadn’t wanted to talk about it when they’d been warm and cosy on his lounge that afternoon. Hopefully, when the time was right, she’d share her story.

The next morning, Adam headed for the shed to do a final check on his woodwork. He examined the bowls and vases with a satisfied nod. They weren’t works of art, but each piece was unique and exactly what people wanted when shopping for local handcrafted homewares.

He packed them up to deliver to Heather, then prepared for the camping trip. Falling off the grid with the boys for a few days was just what he needed to put his head on straight. He could eat, drink, and fish while teaching the young blokes about farm safety, which was something the Maguires and the Taylors were passionate about since farm accidents had traumatised both of their families.

Adam threw his swag and a change of clothes into the ute as his phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and groaned at Jordan’s name on the screen. He didn’t want to answer, but what else could he do?

‘Hi, Adam. How you doing?’

Grimacing at her flirtatious tone, he leaned over the tailgate and stared into the tray.
