Moving through Jungle

In dense secondary jungle, you may have to hack your way through the undergrowth if there is no way of going around it. Chop downwards as low as possible, cutting the stem on both sides so that the plant falls sideways away from the path rather than across it. Take care not to leave spikes. Bamboo points can be lethal if someone falls on them. Some vines and creepers can simply be cut and walked over. It is best to travel slowly as some jungle vegetation has thorns and hooks that will attach themselves to you, tangling you in vegetation. In Malaysia, rattan and other climbing palms are known as nanti sikit, which means “wait-a-while”. If you travel fast through a patch of them, they will tear your clothes off. In any case you need to be careful. Bacteria live in abundance in the humidity of the forest and even a tiny scratch can turn septic quickly.

Hacking your way through the jungle should be avoided if possible. It makes a noise that the enemy might hear and leaves a very obvious trail that they can follow. In dense jungle, SAS patrols aim to travel no faster than a hundred yards an hour, stopping every twenty minutes to listen.
