I2C, or two-wire bus protocol, is a simple, two-wire communications interface that allows for 8-bit, serial, bidirectional data transfer (Figure 5-41). Developed by Philips Semiconductors (now NXP Semiconductor), I2C bus allows for communications speeds from 100 kbps in standard-mode to up to 5 megabits per second (Mbps) in Ultra-Fast mode over only two bus lines, SDA and SCL.
Figure 5-41. I2C communication requires three connections: SDA, SCL, and GND. The fourth connection, power, is only needed if the client device requires power.
