I looked down at the noodles in my bowl. They looked like kalguksu. The noodles were white, glistening with clear broth. There was absolutely no trace of tomato sauce.
I narrowed my eyes in Dadâs direction. Was this another one of his jokes?
âDid you do something to my noodles?â I asked.
âNow youâre just being a sore loser,â Dad replied.
I watched as he continued shoveling noodles into his mouth. It didnât make any sense! I was sure the noodles had changed as soon as they entered my mouth.
I grabbed some more noodles with my chopsticks and slowly took a bite. Yup. It definitely tasted like spaghetti. Meatballs, tomato sauce, and all!
What had happened to my kalguksu? I chugged water, wiped my tongue, and took the tiniest of bites. But no matter what I did, the kalguksu still tasted like spaghetti.
I grumbled to myself as I ate more of the kalguksu-but-not-really-kalguksu. It wasnât that I didnât like spaghetti. I did. I was just really really really looking forward to the kalguksu.
After a couple more bites, I put my chopsticks down and scooted my bowl away. âCan I be excused?â I asked.
I mustâve looked sick because Mom put a hand on my forehead. âWhatâs wrong, Ben? You barely ate.â
âIâm not hungry,â I mumbled.
âYou usually ask for seconds!â she said. âAre you feeling okay?â
I pulled away. âIâm just not hungry, okay?â
I put my dish by the sink and ran up to my room. I didnât know what was going on, but I knew something was wrongâvery wrong.
