Chapter 14
âIâll tell you something, Duke, being in love might be the dandiest thing this side of caramel and peanut butter.â
âI never cared much for caramel or peanut butter,â Duke said.
âWas this how it was for you and Vera? Were you guys madly in love for the first couple of years? Didnât you think it was the best thing that couldâve happened to you? I mean, itâs just swell! Itâs like a ride at the amusement park!â
âThey only last a couple of minutes.â
âWhatâs that?â
âAmusement park rides.â
âYouâre just being cross,â Newt said, and got back on track. âAll your life youâve been waiting for this thing to arrive, and when it gets here, itâs just incredible! Donât you think? I never thought a person could feel this way. I even started liking her stutter, Duke. Sounds cute to me. She doesnât stutter like she used to, sure, so thatâs gotta mean something, right?â
âSheâs getting used to talking back to you.â
âDonât say things like that. Seriously. Amelia and I are just great. Sheâs like the bacon to my potato, the mushroom to my garlic.â
Duke looked at him and frowned.
âWeâve had a few disagreements and things,â Newt went on. âItâs not perfect. I know that. But sheâs sweet. Caring. You know? Thoughtful. She likes to make sure youâre happy.â
âAnd what do you do to make her happy?â
âI rub her feet, make her dinner, and treat her to breakfast whenever I can. I cuddle with her. She likes that. I talk to her. We talk all the time. We never run out of things to talk about. We listen to those mystery shows on the radio, The Phantom Caper, Duckâs Bill. You listen to those, Duke?â
âNo.â
âYouâre not feeling it, are you?â
âI never said that,â Duke told him, walking along the alley.
âSo, whatâs the problem?â
âI donât have one.â
âIt sounds like you do.â
âWell, I donât.â
They continued down the alley. The steady drip-drip of water was coming from somewhere to their right. They were off Columbus and 116th, chasing a dog, or a hound, or something that had killed two people already. Youâd never know it because Newt was stillâafter two yearsâdeeply, madly, and passionately in love. Duke didnât know whether to be sick, flattered, or jealous.
âBut you had kids,â Newt went on.
âShocking, isnât it?â
âAnd youâve been married for almost thirty years. Right?â
âThirty-two years, April second,â Duke said.
âThirty-two years. Wow! Thatâs something, Duke. That really is. Congratulations. I hope me and Amelia get to say that someday.â
âDo you really rub her feet?â
âShe giggles because it tickles.â
âGiggles because it tickles. If Macky were here, heâd turn that into a song.â
âYou might be right,â Newt said. âI hope theyâre doing okay.â
âWe'll check on them soon. Keep your eyes peeled. Youâre distracted.â
âI ainât, though, Duke. Iâm just thinking about how nice it is. It feels good. It makes the time go by, gives you something pleasant to think about. Even now. I know weâre out here chasing some creature and all, and itâs killed a police officer already, but Iâm not letting it get me down.
