Dae Young awakened slowly. The rain had eased and now fell with a low whistling sound punctuated by the click of water falling from one corner of the eaves. It was not the whistling or the clicking, though, but the smell that had woken him. He sat up in the half light, feeling shame flood over him because his father had soiled himself in the night.

He crept to tell his grandmother. She was coming through the yard, a black umbrella held above her head. “Grannie,” he whispered, “Apba has soiled himself.”

She threw the umbrella in the air. “Ah, my son is gone!” And ran into the storage shed, crying out in a wavering voice, “My son! My son!”

Dae Young ran after her, fearful that her commotion would wake his father and start his rage again, but his grandmother was rocking on the floor with her apron thrown across her head, wailing and wailing, while his father lay, his head turned to the side, watching with his mouth hung open in astonishment and eyes that did not move. The stench of him filled the air.

Dae Young felt a rising in his throat and, rushing out into the yard, he vomited until he fell down in the mud on hands and knees, and heaved and heaved.
