CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Evan

We were down in the last quarter and somehow managed to pull things back. At the last minute, I’d put in Emmanuel, which helped J.C. from getting too fatigued. He was the strongest player, but even stars needed to rest. With only five minutes left, the harsh reality was this game would definitely be a loss.

They had worked together—no showboaters this time—showing up for one another and playing as a team. With how strong they had played, never giving up just because it wouldn’t be an easy win, in my book, that was a win. No matter what the outcome was, we were still going to celebrate for playing with heart.

Rounding them up for a quick timeout didn’t take long; within half a minute, they were all huddled up to hear my words of motivation. “You guys are doing good out there. Hustling hard, sharing the ball. When that last buzzer rings, it doesn’t matter what that scoreboard says. Y’all were down twenty-five points, but you never let that discourage you. Get back out there, but don’t overthink things. Make it quick but make it count,” I encouraged, my signs flowing freely with my verbal speech.

“Remember what I taught you. Go out there, have fun, and afterward, we’re all going out to celebrate whatever outcome.” When the game started back up, I turned around just in time to find Luz looking for a proper seat a few rows away. Since she’d caught me peering in her direction, I waved, blowing a kiss for good measure.

Playing along, she pretended to catch the kiss and pressed it to her cheek with the cutest coquettish expression. We knew neither of us would be able to hear one another from this distance and the boisterous crowd, so I held up my phone, gesturing that she should expect an incoming text.

Me: Glad you could finally make it❤

Luz: You know, when you invited me, I didn’t know it was gonna be smack dead in the hood. You got me out here looking uptight and bougie; meanwhile, worst-case scenario is some of these kids prolly goin’ home to an empty fridge. I wish you woulda told me to dress more approachable.

Me: It’s cool. You look nice and there’re only a few minutes left anyway, so you’re dressed appropriate for dinner. Let’s talk more after the game.

There were just a few seconds left in the final quarter, and with the boys finishing strong, they’d only fallen behind six points from the winning score.

“Alright, good game, guys,” I clapped, anticipating their approach. “That’s what I call hustle.”

Many of them were clearing out of the gym and making their way toward the showers, but I wanted to prepare them for our unexpected guest. “Meet me out here when all of you are ready to go. I have a friend coming along, so don’t make us wait too long.” Knowing if I didn’t say that, the final kid would lag and drag their feet.

Luz sashayed down the bleacher staircase, never missing a beat in her four-inch pumps.
