Drakor? The word had frozen him in place. He stared at Tasha as she ran toward the windows, clearly intending to smash through them. Magnus got to her first, grabbing her by the waist as he jerked her back mere inches from the glass. He grasped her throat in his other hand, holding her captive against his body. The sight of his female being held like that sent Vasili’s dragon into a rage. Only the iron manacles on his wrists kept it trapped inside his head.

“Let her go!” Vasili roared. He may have had no power to change shape, but he could still fight as himself.

“You heard him, Vasili. She’s a Drakor.” Magnus’s eyes had turned gold; he was ready to shift if need be. “Don’t tell me you didn’t know.”

Vasili locked gazes with Tasha. “She told me her name was Bellamy.”

“And you didn’t tell me your last name at all,” Tasha countered in a raspy voice.

Everett stepped between Tasha and Vasili. “Magnus, please release Miss Bellamy. I believe we all need to have a calm conversation.”

“But she’ll run.”

“No, she won’t.” Everett turned to Tasha. “Will you, my dear? I guarantee your safety under this roof. While we are at war against your family, we are not at war with you. We are not villains. It is clear you came here with no threat in your mind toward us and little knowledge of your heritage. You have a safe harbor here so long as you behave peacefully. Do you agree not to harm yourself or anyone in my home?”

Vasili saw the fear in Tasha’s eyes. He didn’t know how a Drakor had become his possible true mate, but she had, and they both needed answers.

“I . . . swear,” Tasha breathed.

Everett nodded to Magnus, who released her. She rubbed at her neck, gasping, and staggered away.

Vasili raised his fists. “Set me free, Everett.”

“Do it,” Everett commanded.

Randolph undid the iron manacles and tossed them to one of the men.

“Now, the two of us will have a drink, I think.” Everett approached Tasha and held out his arm. “Please come with me, Miss Bellamy.”

Vasili watched with confusion and jealousy as Tasha, without a glance in his direction, put her arm through Everett’s as he escorted her from the room.

The other dragons filed after him, leaving Randolph and Magnus behind to keep an eye on Vasili.

He was numb. After two days of feeling alive again, he was back in that cave, his body giving out, his soul withering away.

Tasha was a Drakor. Not just any Drakor, but the daughter of the only dragon he truly hated—the dragon who’d murdered Marina.

“How did you end up with a Drakor as a mate?” Randolph asked.

“I don’t know,” Vasili admitted. “She said her name was Bellamy.” He replayed every conversation he ever had with Tasha. “She told me her father was dead. Is this true?”

“It is. He’s been dead for four years. Your nephews killed him.”

“My nephews? Not Ivan? Where was my brother?”

Randolph cleared his throat.

“Ivan is gone,” Magnus said, his usually brusque tone softening slightly.
