Chapter Sixteen

“Marley, let’s go.”

I must look like a complete idiot with my eyes closed, and lips puckered, waiting for a kiss that will never come. Blood rushes to my face, and before I can process what just happened, I am running to keep up with Alex’s long strides. Ugh! How can I face him after that?

This one takes the top spot on the list of the most embarrassing things that have happened to me. I want to curl up in my bed and forget that this ever happened. How could I be so naïve? I now have one more thing to worry about, and at this rate, I'm not sure how much more stress I can take.

I follow quietly behind Alex, mulling over my thoughts and convincing myself anyone in my place would react that way. He is Alex Bellingham, for Christ’s sake. He is irresistible and every teenager’s fantasy.

“Marley!”

I snap out of my engrossment and realize we are already at Mrs. Waltham's office. I couldn't care less about breaking into the principal's office when Alex has completely taken over my mind. I want to know if he saw me stupidly waiting for his kiss and his thoughts about it. His expression is as unreadable as always, and I find myself wishing that I could read minds. It would be so much cooler than being a mere witch.

“Work your magic,” he points to the door.

He’s not mentioning it. That’s good, right? I struggle to find the spells in the tangled mess of my thoughts. Alex is looking at me expectantly, and I can’t even remember the words I practiced over a hundred times.

“Mar…”

“Aperta et detego tuus secreta,” I say quickly before the words get lost again.

For a minute, nothing happens, and then the door creaks slowly, and I have to say Mrs. Waltham does not play about with her security. Ten, if not more, sigils glow brightly all over the room, indicating traps for intruders. I was not expecting so many, and if I can’t figure out how to deactivate at least half of them in minutes, we will be so screwed.

“Can you deactivate them?” Alex asks, reading my mind.

Lucky bastard!

“They are complex. I’m not good with this kind of magic.”

“Okay. We’ll find another way.”

“No,” I dispute abruptly, “We are already here. We can’t go back.”

“Minuere haec locus,” I start a low chant.

Three glowing sigils slowly die out as I repeat the spell for the rest of them. Magic is coursing through my veins, and this is the strongest I have ever felt. The super moon did something to my magic, and I’m starting to think that whatever happened to me wasn’t a bad thing after all. Excruciating pain and blacking out must be the price to pay for extra powers, or maybe the moon goddess is compensating for the bad years.

“Wow, that’s amazing,” Alex says with pride when the last sigils die out.

Could I be any redder? I can’t begin to count all the times I have blushed since I met Alex.
