I could have sat in that moment forever, but nothing lasts that long. Especially not in a restaurant. The door to the kitchen banged open and our server came out with her hands full of our trays. Behind her walked a man in a white chef’s outfit, complete with the puffy hat. He carried a bucket of ice and tucked into those cold blocks was nestled a bottle of chilled wine.

The woman slipped the plates in front of us and scurried back, wherein the chef stepped forward with a smile and a bow of his head. I didn’t see any red in his eyes, but there was something uncanny about his appearance. Maybe it was the white hairs that stuck out from under his hat that stood in stark contrast to his middle-aged face, or maybe it was the unnatural curve of his fingers as they wrapped around the bucket. They were incredibly long and had nails so sharp they glistened in the dim light.

“A greeting to you, oh client of exquisite taste!” he hailed as he set the bucket in the center of the table. He pulled out the wine bottle and showed us both the yellowed paper. “We have a fine wine for you tonight! Over a century old, and still as fresh as the day it was bottled! Let me help you sample it and see how much you would like to drink.”

“All of it,” Eric told him as he grasped the bottle.

The chef, however, clung tightly to the glass as his mouth dropped open. “A-all of it, sir? But that is a very great amount of-”

“All of it,” Eric insisted as he gave a tug on the bottle.

The chef clapped his mouth shut and shook his head. “Allow me, sir!” He dug into his coat and drew out a bottle opener.

All eyes were now on us as the chef stuck the screw into the cork and began to drill into the plug. I sank into my seat as Eric frowned at the insistent culinarian. “We can handle this ourselves.”

The chef gave a great yank and the cork popped out of the mouth. The plug sprang off the opener and into the olive tree where it struck one of the fruits. The olive dropped onto the table and rolled to a stop in front of me. At the same moment the chef’s face lost all its color and he whipped his head around to look at the other guests.

They stood up as one, and it was then that I noticed that more than one didn’t look human. Some of their hands transformed into wolf claws and others showed their fangs. There was even a witch who held a bottle of some concoction.

The chef scuttled back, and that was the signal. The other patrons leapt at us with their greedy eyes on the olive. Out of some primal instinct I snatched the olive from the table and grasped it between both hands. A shadow loomed up between the mob and me, and I lifted my eyes to find it was Eric.
