Chapter Eight

“Chance!” Pru screamed as she watched him drop, the electric fence tape still caught behind his boot heel.

Having ridden straight through the creek behind the runaway herd with Moon-Eye, she was already opening the door before he could stop the pick-up.

Will beat her to Chance by seconds, and using his Stetson, knocked the tape away from Chance’s foot. It seemed to dance on its own.

“Damn!” Will cursed. “That wire’s hot!”

Pru dropped to her knees, then felt for a pulse and put her cheek to Chance’s lips. “He’s not breathing! And his heart’s not beating!”

Her reaction was instinctive — she administered a precordial thump on the chest in hopes of jump-starting his heart into beating again. But while his body responded involuntarily to the sharp blow, Chance remained inert.

Reality distorted for Pru.

The milling herd seemed to dissipate and the humans gathering around her seemed giant in stature, as below her, the man she loved lay without a heartbeat.

Dead!

Panic filled her. “You can’t be dead, Chance Quarrels, you can’t die on me!”

A hand on her shoulder tried pulling her away. She shrugged it off and focused.

Quickly, she slipped a hand behind his neck and tilted his head back to create an airway.

No pulse.

Repositioning herself, she ran her fingers over his ribs ... found the right spot on the sternum ... placed one palm over the other and pumped.

“One and two and three and...”

Fifteen strokes in all.

Bart was down on the ground opposite her. “Take a rest. I’ll take over and pump.”

Knowing working as a team would be easier, Pru nodded.

She felt a kind of desperation that she had never before known — she who loved him and the brother whom Chance didn’t even believe cared.

“No pulse,” Pru croaked.

“One ... one thousand...two... one thousand... three... one thousand...”

Bart kept his strokes slow and steady and she kept checking to see if it was working.

No pulse.

A minute passed and still they worked over Chance.

No pulse.

And another...

Suddenly a flutter brushed her fingertips.

“Wait, I’ve got it!” Nearly strangling on her excitement, she put her face close to his lips and felt a faint warmth blossom along her cheek. “He’s breathing!”

Then she broke down and sobbed in relief.

Bart yelled, “Will, get back to the house fast and call an ambulance!”

“I’m already gone,” the hand said, practically flying onto his mount and heading back along the creek bed.

Josie helped Pru up as Bart got Moon-Eye to bring the pick-up as close as he could to where Chance still lay unconscious. Then they all joined in carefully lifting him to the truck bed.

“He’s going to be all right now,” Josie assured Pru with a hug. “You saved his life. You and Bart and Will.”

Pru nodded and clasped Josie’s hand in relief. “I’ve got to go with him.”

As she climbed up onto the back of the truck, Bart said, “Kleef and Josie, you see to the injured cattle as best you can.” He grabbed a rifle from the rack and threw it at the new hand.

Kleef caught it, nodding. “I’ll do what needs to be done.
