Figure 15: Wheel of the Year
Astrologically speaking, the solstices and equinoxes correspond with the sun entering the cardinal signs (i.e., the sun enters Aries at the vernal equinox, Cancer at the summer solstice, etc., as pictured in Figure 15). Many solstice and equinox observances align metaphorically with the seasons. For instance, rituals at the beginning of spring can focus on new life after winter, deriving wisdom from experiences had during winter, planting our intentions, etc.
The remaining four holidays that are traditionally observed in Wicca—Beltane, Lammas, Samhain, and Imbolc—occur near the midpoints between the solstices and equinoxes. These holidays have traditional and astrological significance, which often overlaps, and consequently, many people observe them on the exact astrological midpoint days. For instance, astrologically speaking, the veil between the worlds is the thinnest when the sun is at fifteen degrees Scorpio, so it makes sense to observe Samhain then. The same holds for celebrating Beltane, a fertility holiday, when the sun is at fifteen degrees Taurus. Observing these holidays at the apexes of the fixed signs also affords us strong, focused elemental energy that can be harnessed.
Working with the seasonal holidays can greatly aid in inner alchemy, as there’s astrological support for different aspects of it during them (i.e., renewal on the Winter Solstice, making peace with what’s passed on during Samhain, etc.). If we can fit a working with the astrology or a seasonal metaphor, it’ll align with the holiday’s energy. Otherwise, observing the Wheel of the Year can also help us feel more connected with nature.
