The metal may be popular for wedding rings, but jewelry accounts for just 21 percent of its overall demand, down from 45 percent in 1999. China is to platinum what India is to gold: the largest single market for jewelry made from the metal.

But the big driver of platinum demand today isn’t lovers, it’s cars. The automotive industry sucks up more platinum than any other single industry, where it’s used in catalytic converters to reduce exhaust emissions.
