Once you have done the spell, you can sit very still and hold the pendulum out in front of you, held loosely between two fingers. Then you can ask the cat if it is there. If the pendulum moves, you can try asking specific questions (Are you content? Will you come back to me some day in another form?). Just remember that the answers have to be either yes or no.
You will also want to be open to other forms of communication. You may simply sense the cat’s presence, or feel as if they have brushed by you, or patted you gently with a paw. Or they could knock over something. Cats, you know.
Quiet your mind as much as possible. Put everything in front of you and light the candle. Then say the spell and try one or both of the methods of communication. You may have to be patient—cats don’t always come right away when you call them, do they?
(Cat’s name), I miss you
(Cat’s name), I call you
Come to me if you can, little one
Speak to me in your soft voice
Touch me with your gentle paw
Let me know you’re here
(Cat’s name), I miss you
(Cat’s name), I call you
With love in my heart
I ask you to visit me
Here, kitty kitty
Meow!
A Meditation for Letting Go of Grief
If there is one thing I have learned from losing those I love—both people and cats—it is that grief is like a living thing. It is different every time, completely unpredictable, and it takes as long as it takes to run its course. Sometimes letting go is easier than you expected. Sometimes it is so gut-wrenching you feel as though you will never be able to take a deep breath again.
And don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t allowed to grieve for your beloved fur companion, just as you would for any other friend or member of your family. While we are more attached to some cats than to others, for many of us, our cats are practically an extension of our bodies, and losing them can feel as though someone has cut off one of your limbs—without benefit of anesthesia.
Grief can’t be ignored and it can’t be hurried…but it also can’t be allowed to keep you from moving on with your life, and sometimes we have a hard time letting it go. If you are struggling with this, try doing this meditation. I hope it helps.
Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. You can do this on the night of the full or dark moon or during the middle of a sunny day, whatever feels right to you. If you want, play some music in the background, as long as it is meditative in nature. Optional: Sage yourself before and after with a smudge wand, and rinse your hands and face in a bowl of water. You can also light a white candle and stare at it instead of closing your eyes, if that works better for you.
Sit comfortably. Close your eyes or let them relax as you look at the candle.
