This IRA lesson design explicitly took into consideration the notion of holding high expectations for SELs and ELLs; specifically taught linguistic skills via fluency of the poetry performances from the book Jazz; used multisensory techniques such as instruments, as well as other scaffolds to contextualize the text; and was culturally responsive in its historical introduction and perspective. Similarly, the text and school assembly honored diversity and allowed it to come alive, while also teaching higher-order thinking skills of analysis.
