Chapter Five

My best guess is that Sophie’s with Jeremy. I flip my phone over in my hand a few times while I consider calling her, then calling Jeremy—just to know that she’s safe, and that she has someone to talk to. That she doesn’t have to go through this rollercoaster of emotions alone—from the anticipation she must have felt while waiting for me to come home so she could pop the question, to the havoc my words must have wreaked on her.

I don’t know what to do. I pace up and down the living room, glancing through the window, hoping I will see her car drive back to the house. But the street remains empty.

I go upstairs to check what she’s taken with her. Not that much of her stuff seems to be missing. She packed as though she’s coming back. I know that, rationally, I shouldn’t want her to come back, but of course I want her to. She’s only been gone fifteen minutes and I miss her already. This was never going to be easy for me, either. I should have planned my own heartbreak better. But there’s no such thing as planning for heartbreak, for the cold hard steel of a knife piercing your heart, despite knowing it’s coming. And Sophie had every right to tell me to go fuck myself—it looks like I’ve done a good job of that already.

When I can’t take it anymore, and because I have lost someone in an accident before, I call Jeremy. I need to know Sophie’s safe.

“Hey Dolo.” His voice is all cheer. Clearly, he doesn’t know yet. “Happy birthday, or am I still not allowed to say that?”

“Thanks, um…”

“Vasily says happy birthday as well.” I hear a man’s voice in the background.

“Yeah, thanks, I take it you haven’t heard from Sophie?”

“Hm, no… Should I have?”

“You might.” I pause. If anyone knew about Sophie planning to propose to me, it must be her best friend, Jeremy. “We… fell out.” Fell out? I guess you could call it that. “She might be on her way to you. I just want to know that she’s physically fine. If you could just let me know.”

“Wait, wait, wait.” Jeremy’s not going to let me off the hook easily, I know that much. It’s not his style. “What did you fall out over?”

“Damn it, Jeremy… she asked me to marry her.”

“I know!” He can’t hide the excitement in his voice. “Since when is that something to fall out over?” He goes silent. “Oh.” A deep sigh. “Did you say no? To Soph?”

“I couldn’t very well say yes, could I?”

“Of course you could. That’s exactly what you say when a woman who loves and adores you asks you to marry her. You say yes without qualms, with zero doubt, with all the power in your voice.”

Of course, Jeremy’s going to be all dramatic about it.

“I got ordained so I could marry the two of you, by the way,” he adds.

“We won’t be needing your services.” The deflation I feel in my body has reached my voice.
