OFFENSE
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love (1 John 4:18).
This is where our offense startsâfrom His perfect love. Offense is possible because perfect love prevails. If we were not guarded by the perfect, impenetrable love of God, then we would probably have a lot more to worry about and offense by faith would be a lot more difficult. But since God has our backâas well as our front and all sides, for that matterâwe can focus on offense. However, even when we know this in our thoughts, it has to make it down to our hearts. For this to happen, we must gain a new, more whole understanding of what His perfect love is. Without such, we may want to play offense, and we may even try to do so, but we will live in a state of timidity, hesitancy, and defensiveness. And that just will not do. A tentative, fearful offense can actually be more of a liability than a threat to take hold of victory. We must go all in.
The best offense originates from the true understanding of how perfect and impenetrable Godâs love for us really is. This is our foundation. Once we have this foundation firmly in place and supporting all our thoughts and actions, we can then move forward with an offensive advance that will take ground back from the thief, possess new land, and advance His Kingdom here on earth as it is in Heaven.
While living in Ethiopia, I had a few favorite sayings in the primary local language of Amharic. One of them was straight from this foundation. I said it loud, and I said it often. I spoke it to the poor on the streets, and I declared it over our local leadership team. âEgziahbir fikur fitsum neow!â (Egg-Zah-bih-here fick-ur fit-soom ny-oh.) Godâs love is perfect!
The problem is, when I say this out loud or to myself, I realize that my earthly comprehension of what is âperfectâ is pretty lacking. Perfect in my eyes carries an earthly connotation. Basically, my idea of perfect is jaded by the imperfections of the world. But when God says His love is perfect, it is a supernatural perfection. I often think of it as a sphere around me with no gaps. It is impenetrable. There is no way that anything can touch me that doesnât go through God first, unless I welcome it through my own choices and agreements. As we move forward with God, His love perfectly protects us so that we can focus on the calling set before usâto give life! This is the kind of defense God plays on our behalf. Is there any possibility of losing if your defense is perfect? Is there any risk or chance of loss if the other teamâs attack is rendered ineffective? Godâs love is perfect, whole, without gaps, impenetrable. This removes any need to hold onto fear, and it takes with it any natural compulsion to play defense.
