CHAPTER 68
THE MORRIS CERULLO World Evangelism (MCWE) ministry continued to grow, causing Morris and Theresa to begin praying about establishing a more strategic location as a base of operations. Confident that their future included a lot of global travel, they needed a place that was convenient for international flights and where they could host large gatherings of people at any time of year without worries about weather.
Their evaluation of locations was full of starts and stops. Whenever they thought they had found a place with strong potential, obstacles quickly arose. That is, until they encountered San Diego in southern California.
Having spent their lives living in the northeast they were only vaguely aware of the area. In the 1950s the United States was exploding with growth, but most of it was taking place in the eastern portion of the country. Many Americans considered New York City to be the center of the universe. It was home to the nation’s most prestigious newspapers and magazines, television networks, radio stations, and premier sports and entertainment options. Its skyscrapers were a marvel, and the city’s eight million residents were more than double the population of its closest rival, Chicago. Other major population centers in the northeast corridor included Philadelphia (2 million); Baltimore (1 million); Washington, DC (more than three-quarters of a million); and Boston (700,000).
San Diego, paradise that it was, remained the secret jewel of the west. Tucked in the southwestern corner of California, by 1960 it had barely more than half a million people. The more the Cerullos studied San Diego, the more promising it looked. The weather was as good as it gets. The airport provided a steady stream of flights on multiple airlines to all areas of the world. And being on the West Coast facilitated flights to Asia and the South Pacific nations, such as the Philippines.
After many months of praying and waiting for guidance they chose San Diego and moved there in 1959. They spent their first six months in a motel with their three children before moving into an apartment in the Kearny Mesa region of the San Diego metropolis. Although it was a radical change from living in New York, the family immediately embraced the milder climate and quickly felt at home in the new environs.
Setting up an office for their operations enabled Theresa to expand their communications with the ever-growing list of supporters and partners. The ministry invested in some of the cutting-edge printing and mailing equipment of the day, saving thousands of hours of labor and enabling more frequent and descriptive information to be sent. Most importantly, it enabled the ministry to solidify its relationships with the thousands of people they had met and ministered to around the nation and to receive timely advice and prayer support from that network of friends.
It wasn’t long after settling down in San Diego that invitations to minister overseas were received. The West Coast relocation proved to be immediately advantageous, as Morris accepted invitations from churches in Hong Kong and in the Philippines.
