CHAPTER 14

NOAH

We’re going to need a bigger ship.

Jillian’s presence didn’t make the fighter seem much more crowded than it was with just Reggie and me. Somehow, though, the addition of her dad makes things a lot tighter. He’s not a small guy, and that’s part of it, but it’s more about the bag of junk he brought than his actual size. He’s dumped the bag in a corner of the bunk, as out of the way as it can be, though I’m pretty sure I’m going to trip over it before this little jaunt is done.

I hope whatever he brought is useful, like that contraption he whipped out back in his cabin, but I’ll try not to count on it.

With only two crew seats and a fold-down bench in the cockpit, someone now has to sit in the bunk at all times. I wish Alistair were here to commandeer us a ship. But he’s not, so we’ll deal with being a little cramped.

I’m glad Adam’s all right; I hated the idea that Reggie might’ve found her father just to lose him again in the matter of a few hours. I’m not sure she’d ever have forgiven herself if he hadn’t made it out.

I’m in the pilot seat, Reggie slumped in the seat beside me, while Jillian patches Adam’s hurt arm behind us in the bunk. The door’s open, and I can hear the rustles of bandages, the murmur of her voice as she tells him to sit still.

Again, I expect to see a fighter come shooting out of Sirius to chase us down, or to appear out from behind another fleet ship. But no one’s following us out here.

It’s weird to see the fleet without its usual parade of shuttles, at least as I knew it on the First Fleet side. There was always traffic humming back and forth. Passenger shuttles, inter-ship trade routes, flying lessons. It was a busy place.

Now, it’s silent. The good thing about that is that we’ll be able to see anyone who might be pursuing us. The bad thing? That benefit goes both ways. They’ll be able to see us, too.

We need a plan. I think our next step is an obvious one, but it’d be a poor show of leadership to say so. I’m not sure exactly how to broach the discussion, though, and my brain’s pretty tired. I should probably direct most of my focus at the task of flying, so I decide to go with the direct approach.

“I think we need to save the others,” I say. “That should be the priority.”

“Always the hero,” Jillian mutters. I want to ask how she can say that when we just met, but I guess she probably watched the tournament long enough to form an impression of me. I’m not trying to play hero; it’s just that the twelve-hour clock is ticking down in my head, and an innocent person will die if we don’t reach them before that.

Reggie’s staring at her hands, hair hanging around her face like a ragged curtain.
