Chapter 15

Istiklal was crowded by the time I left the tower, and the walk home took even longer than usual. It was already dark by the time I opened the garden gate, and I was exhausted. I jumped when I saw the figure under the fig tree, but then he straightened.

The doorman. Had he meant to scare me?

“yi ak amlar.”

“yi ak amlar.” He hesitated.

“What is it?”

He said something in Turkish.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I don’t understand.”

He spoke some more.

“Repairmen?” I said. “Klima?”

“Evet!” He spoke rapidly and then stopped abruptly. There was something suddenly formal in his bearing. Had I slighted him in some way? Was I treating him like a servant? Or not enough like a servant? What was proper?

“Klima?”

“Klima, evet.”

“Bugün?”

“Hayir.”

“Tomorrow, then?” I said, using my finger to show the day’s turning.

“Evet.”
