Chapter Twelve

"Damn it, Amy! Look at you! This has to stop! We're going to the hospital, and I'm calling Dr. Winters."

He was pulling her towards the bathroom door, but she couldn't let him take her. She was remembering. She was so close now. So close. She had to keep going. He was going to ruin it. Ruin it all!

"NO!" she screamed, digging in her heels and pulling at her hand. "Let me go! I have to do this!"

"WHY?" he yelled. "WHY?"

"Because! You don't understand; you can't understand! You're just Tate. You've always been Tate. Tate, Tate, Tate!"

"Isn't that enough?" he asked softly. "Tate and Amy?"

"No," she whispered, feeling terrible as she watched the hurt cloud his perfect eyes. She'd never hurt him before. She hated that she had hurt him .

"Our life is perfect," she said, trying to explain. "You're perfect. Everything's perfect except this!"

She blinked, and more memories dived into her. Ice cream in the park. A birthday party in the park with pink cake and ice cream. Fireworks from a rooftop. Feathers coated in blood. Floating down softly, twirling in the air like bloodied dancers.

"Amy," Tate pleaded.

She opened her eyes. "What happens when our daughter asks where I was born?"

"You say you don't know."

"Who doesn't know where they were born?!" she exclaimed, trying to focus on him, trying to ignore the scent of burning toast pulling at her mind.

"Lots of people I bet."

"Don't be ridiculous!" she snapped. "Everyone knows where they were born! What happens when she asks me about my tenth birthday or my first period or my first lost tooth! I don't remember any of those things!"

"I'm sorry," he said, absolutely sincere. "But it's not worth killing yourself over."

"I'm not killing myself!" she screamed.

The tooth fairy had given her three dollars. He had said that was the going rate for princess teeth .

"I swear to God you are!" Tate shouted, angrier than she'd ever seen him. "I won't let you do this!"

"You won't let me? Who are you to stop me?"

The anger faded beneath a mask of hurt so deep, she was scared she'd broken him. "I'm going to be your husband," he said softly. "It's my job to protect you."

"Not from this," Amy growled, still struggling against him. She was out of pills. Dr. Winters would never give her more, not now. This was her last chance.

Daddy took her to the grocery store and let her pick out her own sanitary pads. He said he didn't know which ones were best and found a young mother to ask. The woman had giggled and explained what the different types were for. She listened, then picked the package with the most pink on it.

"You can't take me!" Amy screamed. "I won't let you!" She tried to force Tate away, tried to push him out of the bathroom so she could lock the door behind him, barricade it against him.

He didn't budge. He just took out his phone and dialed 911. She heard the operator ask "What is the nature of your emergency? "

She was running out of time.
