Charles Sidney’s account of the rise and practice of modern book-making is titled The Art of Legging. He traces the rise of the leg and his development towards what we would recognise as a bookmaker, beginning early in the nineteenth century:

All those who wanted a bet would ride or draw their carriages up to … the ‘Betting Post’. The Legs were always there ready and waiting for the owners, noblemen and any who fancied a bet and all joined in the screaming melee. Even though the gentry bet among themselves they still came to the Post for that extra something that racecourse betting offered. The Legs were countenanced, even those whose settlement was doubtful, because, sometimes, their prices were too good to be missed … As certain Legs came with regularity to the Post so did they acquire a reputation for honest dealings, or at least settlement if not quite dealings. (Sidney, 24)
