Chapter 17

Abby walked with Nathanial into the Upton ball two days after Daniel had saved her from that knife-wielding man. Two days where she’d attempted once again to get Dimity back into her household and to forget about Daniel.

“Smile, sister. You are scaring people.”

“This is my social facade, brother. I find it deters fools.”

Around them were walls covered in silk and expensive ornaments. Gilt-framed artwork hung depicting things from portraits to scenery. It was not a home but a showpiece.

“Gabe has one of those. It deters women,” Nathan said.

“I find it hard to believe you actually try to deter women.”

“Only the nice ones.”

“Very amusing.”

“It is you who keeps saying we are keeping company with the wrong women.”

“You are, but I also know you can be polite and gentlemanly should you need to.”

“Good Lord, I do believe that is praise.”

Gabe, Zach, and Michael were behind them as they walked the long carpet to where they would greet their hosts. They did not usually all attend these gatherings—one or two of them accompanied her—but her brothers had been spooked by the incident with the knife, and now they were even more suffocating, if that was possible.

If she was honest, she was spooked also. Daniel had saved her, but why had someone wanted to harm her in the first place? She had no enemies.

“I have been thinking, Nathan.”

“There is always a first for most things.”

“And have decided I want to go to Devon to visit with Aunt Louisa and my cousins.”

“What?”

“You heard. I will be safe there and away from London. I want to go there, Nathan, and spend the remainder of the season with them.” Until that moment, she hadn’t realized just how much she missed her aunt and cousins. “And I want to take Dimity with me.”

“Don’t be foolish; we cannot protect you from there.”

“It is not foolish!”

“Problem?” The words came from Gabe behind them. Nathan waved them away.

“You cannot leave London in the middle of the season, and that is the end of this matter.”

She shot him a look and saw his jaw was clenched. His hair was carelessly ruffled, as Nathan tended to be the brother who ran his hand through his locks when he was thinking.

“I want to leave, but I will return next year older and wiser. Perhaps then I will be able to close my eyes to your behavior and the whispers and innuendos.”

“We don’t behave badly!”

“You do, and regularly. I know you gamble—”

“But never seriously, and only with money we can afford to lose.”

“And that makes it better, does it?”

“Why is it you feel the need to censure us constantly now?”

“Someone has to mold you into better men. Besides, you censure me constantly and watch my every move.”

“The Earl of Raine, Lady Abigail Deville, Mr. Deville, Mr. Michael Deville, and Mr. Zachriel Deville.”

“At least that shut you up,” Nathanial muttered.

Abby greeted their hosts, then followed her brothers into the ballroom. The noise of music, chatter, and laughter was everywhere. Servants circulated among the primped and pampered guests with silver salvers filled with champagne.
