Three

Nick wrapped the chains around my wrists again, and I took it this time, with no complaints. No wincing. No struggle.

​Nick led me down the darkest hall to a dark, closed-off room with no windows, and no lights. Without tugging me. Without tightening the chain. Without forcing me to follow him a certain length away.

We had an understanding now. He might not like it and neither did I, really, but it was better. Almost nicer, even. I wouldn't want to be here any other day, not under these, or any different circumstances, but at least he wasn't being as violent and pushy as he was before. That was enough of a win for me.

I took a slow breath as he lowered me to the floor and connected the chains to a hook above my head, drawing my arms up and straightening them out. I took a deep breath.

I knew what was coming but nothing could've prepared me for it.

Despite the fact that he had calmed down a bit and that he had seemed to be gentler, he brought me into one of the most secluded rooms he had, in the most secluded prison in the world.

To torture and punish me in one of the most depraved ways.

"Tieran, is it?" Nick asked from behind me.

"Leave her out of this." I demanded.

"I don't think you have much room for negotiations,Peter."

"Do what you will to me, but don't let her name cross your lips."

"What will you do about it?" Nick sneered. "Fight me? Pin me against a wall until I choke? You can't kill me. We’ve already established that."

"Doesn't mean I can't make it worse for you, either," I said with a bit of toy in my voice. He was right, though. I had no room for negotiations.

I had nothing to barter.

I was hanging from a hook in a dark, soundproofed room that I knew better than anyone.

My eyes dragged over the blackened brick to the corner where, carved into the stone, were tally marks. Only a few. Fourteen to be exact, from the fortnight I'd spent here after disobeying mother when I decided to stop taking children.

Taking me away seemed like a silly punishment.

She should've forced me to steal children against my will if that's the point she was trying to make. I can't steal any children when I'm locked away in a fucking dungeon.

"Tieran..." he paused as I heard a shifting of paperwork. Unfolded, scanned, and folded again. "Nicole," he said pointedly. Followed by a rather sinister, "Tyson."

I felt the anger in the pit of my stomach begin to bubble. I wanted to fight back. To curse his name over all the land. I wanted to make him feel shame for what he was doing to me.

But once again, just like always, I was pitiful. Incompetent. Unable to make those decisions on my own. To make those moves. Those changes. I was strapped down, held back. Imprisoned.

Whether it was here, with physical chains, or in my fortress at the South Pole, I had nothing to show for my good deeds.
