Best,

Kalyndra Smith

Freedom, or at least the hope of it. It was like keys that had been dropped outside a prisoner’s cell. She just had to grab it.

“Finally, something good.” Sabrina set her phone to the side. She didn’t want to be rude to Ray, not after everything he’d done to help her, so she’d respond later. “I’ve got an interview at the Elephant Room. I’ve been waiting weeks for something like this. They’re a news site that writes about under-the-radar issues, like how with the rising ocean waters, buying real estate in central Virginia might be the brilliant investment that will make you millions. Or the best matching sites that will help you find compatible doomsday-bunker neighbors. The issues that no one talks about now, but might be huge news next year. They’re ahead of their time.” Or possibly crackpots, but who was Sabrina to judge? It was a job not in the Wisconsin Dells.

As she spoke, she tore off another hunk of cinnamon roll and stuffed it in her mouth, the cinnamon-and-sugar pastry tasting ten times better than it had a few minutes ago. This would be how she broke up her summer. Pre e-mail and post e-mail. She’d worry about doing the actual job later. For now, she’d savor the keys she finally held in her hand—it was up to her to use them.

“This job isn’t here, is it?”

“God no. It’s the lifeline I needed.”

Ray fidgeted with his glasses, cleaning them on his T-shirt and holding them up to the grimy fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling.

“We should get started,” he said.

Sabrina kept talking over him, not noticing his flat tone. “They want to interview me on Friday. I’ll call in sick to the ducks, buy a plane ticket, come back on a late flight. Then I can rest all day Saturday.” After the stress of travel and an interview, she’d need the entire day to recharge. “It’s just twenty-four hours. What could go wrong, right?”

Ray looked at her through his sparkling-clean glasses. “Congratulations. I’m sure you’ll get the job.”

Sabrina finally noticed that Ray had gone still, and his face didn’t look right without the ever-present smile.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be here to help with the Goodbye Gala. This is just the first step back to my real life.”
