A COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBILITY

For marriages to survive in this decade of divorce, there must be a commitment to responsibility. Unless matrimony is built upon a foundation of mutual dedication, no amount of encouragement will stave off the forces pulling against it. Dr. Robert B. Taylor, author of the book, Couples: The Art of Staying Together, wrote, “We’re now living in the age of disposability: Use it once, and throw it away. Over the past decade, there has developed a feeling that relationships are equally disposable.”6

But the Bible knows nothing of throw-away marriages. In the poetic language of the Old Testament, marital responsibility is described in these words: “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). There is far more to this statement than first meets the eye:

“Leave” (asav, Hebrew) and “join” (davaq, Hebrew) are terms associated with covenant treaties. Here, marriage is interpreted as a new relationship bound by mutual oath.

Sexual intimacy is an expression of the union of the two people; however, sexual union by itself is not sufficient to define the biblical concept of marriage.7
