THE BROTHERHOOD
OF JOHNS
We'd be labeled… twisted demons, even though most of us are as mellow as can be and wouldn't harm a soul. We just like to get laid and we realize we have to pay for it.
—A JOHN WHO CALLS HIMSELF BEACH COMBER
Slickdickrick, Thickcane, Organgrinder, Manwhore.
Mobydick, Loverboy, Dickus, Dickyloong.
Caveman, Tigerwoody, Latinoheat69.

NO, THEY'RE NOT THE HANDLES OF AGING porn stars. But yes, most are deliberately and ridiculously suggestive. That's part of the game.
So is sharing. Sharing photos, for instance, of their most boast-worthy erotic conquests. Pictures of women sprawled out on mattresses, close-ups of lips surrounding once-flaccid members, photos of body parts and naked women's faces, wide-angle shots of awkward positions and penetrations.
But don't bet on seeing the man behind the camera. His face is well hidden or obscured by shadows.
Welcome to the brotherhood of johns — a secret fraternity where men boast yet cower… come out yet hide. It is the biggest support network on the planet for men who get off on paying for sex, and it is available 24-7 in every corner of the globe served by an Internet connection. It is not an exclusive club. Its members number in the millions. Entry is free on most sex sites, and any man with a predilection for prostituted women can join. That is, as long as he follows the brotherhood's rules, which means buying into the philosophy that man is hardwired to pay for play.
The prime objective of the brotherhood is to assist johns in achieving liftoff. It is a locker room, a travel agent, a tour guide, and a coach. For johns who congregate here, it is a candy store, but also a peep show and peddler of porn. For those who have paid for sex but are feeling pangs of remorse, it's a confession booth, a therapist, and “Dear Abby” rolled into one. For the john who is frugal, it's a financial advisor, and for the savvy consumer, it's a Frommer's. It is a veritable gold mine of information on the whos, hows, and why-nots of pay for play. There are even hints of a legal hotline with tips on how to avoid “LE”—law enforcement.
But it's also a powerful introduction service connecting johns with millions of others just like them. Some are novices, others veterans. Many offer advice. Some become mentors. Yet all have at least one thing in common — they are committed to their so-called hobby and no longer afraid to say it… at least online.
There are, of course, few consequences, as none of them ever uses his real name. They fondle their mice and tap away at their keyboards from the relative safety of cyberspace. The Internet has made for a remarkable transformation. The solitary john furtively gleaning the personal-services ads in the back pages of tabloids has been replaced by a technologically empowered breed imbued with bravado and worldly zeal.
