CHAPTER ELEVEN: EID EL BARBARA

“What do you mean you don’t want to go to the Barbara party?” Widad asked. She looked down at Clara, who had just taken her bed hostage. It was the second of December, and winter had come, as Game of Thrones fans would say. Widad’s bed was small and cozy, and she loved to bury herself under its covers. Ever since Erick and Saint Grace-Marie Bou Mansour had made up, Clara had been slightly down. She couldn’t say anything; she couldn’t speak up nor express herself. And what would she say anyway: “I’m depressed because the man that I love doesn’t want me, or I have an unrequited love that needs to be snuffed out of my soul because it is becoming the epitome of unhealthy?” What was she supposed to tell Andrew or Widad? There was nothing she could do but hold her tongue and hope for the best.

“Well, I really don’t feel like mingling with anyone from uni! I thought maybe we could all go up to my place in Jnoub and spend the weekend,” Clara replied, hiding under the covers.

“I dunno… I really feel like going to the party.”

“Let’s just go to Jnoub… Besides, since when do you like parties?”

“Well, it’s a costume party. I was going to go as, well, anything with a big mask on. Also, Fatima and I were supposed to set up the Christmas tree this weekend.”

“The tree can wait. I really need to get away from here for a couple of days. It could be good for us. We can relax, watch DVDs all day and maybe have a drink or two.”

“Fine, fine, we’ll go. But Andy has to come with us.” Widad said with a deep sigh.

“Deal!” shrieked Clara as she grabbed Widad’s hand and pulled. She fell on top of her with a thud, and the girls laughed hard to the point where Clara began to cough. Clara knew that Widad had feelings for Andrew. She wanted, more than once, to burst her bubble but wouldn’t dare. She was certain Andrew was gay and felt obliged to warn her best friend, but she didn’t want to be responsible for starting a rumor concerning the boy’s sexuality and losing him as a friend forever.

“Guys! I’m trying to watch Breaking Dawn Part 1! Please be quiet!” Fatima yelled from the living room.

“Hasn’t she seen it like… a thousand gazillion times?” Clara laughed. “When does she study?”

As Widad gossiped about her roommate’s study habits, Clara’s mind drifted toward the vision she had during her out-of-body experience. She couldn’t get the monstrous creatures out of her head. She hadn’t managed to astral project since that day. She was too afraid. She thought her powers might open a door she may not be able to close. That door might lead her to the man in black and her family, but she wasn’t strong enough to face all the things she had seen with her astral eyes. The man in black called her an abomination, but she had yet to learn what she was.
