Me and My Shadow

Taylor had begun to feel paranoid. It seemed like she ran into Anthony everywhere she went. It could just be a coincidence, but she didn’t recall having seen him so much before. Perhaps she had just not noticed because she wasn’t looking for him.

Though she had asked that security not allow him in the building, they had not done a very good job of keeping him out. Because he worked for a company that they did business with, he was allowed in as long as he had business to conduct. So, he had taken to making deliveries rather than the graphics department having to make a run for their finished printing. Everyone but Taylor saw it as a good thing that he brought things to them.

He had also begun to eat at the little deli where they had run into one another previously. Taylor couldn’t blame him, as she had suggested that he eat there more often before she realized he had issues. It wasn’t as if he stared at her or even spoke. In fact, he usually tried to sit on the other side of the room and kept his head buried in a book or played what she assumed was some sort of game on his tablet. Still, it made her uncomfortable and she stopped going there, but every time she found someplace new that she liked, he would turn up there, as well. It was just too often to be coincidence, wasn’t it?

After a while, she began taking her lunch to work and eating at her desk unless invited out with a group of people where she wouldn’t be sitting alone. It was after this that she began seeing him in other places and began to feel really unnerved again. Perhaps it was time to reconsider and get that restraining order. She had always heard that they were useless pieces of paper that only served a purpose after someone actually tried or did harm you. However, it might send a message to him that he should not cross that line. It was something she would have to think about. Getting a restraining order against someone unnecessarily could really mess up their lives and cause even more friction.

Though she was almost always hanging out with Joshua and Kelly these days, she hadn’t mentioned anything further to him about Anthony. The last thing she wanted was for him to overreact again and maybe even confront Anthony about what it was he was doing. Plus, things seemed to be changing between them and having to deal with a stalker, no matter how harmless might detract from their relationship. The last thing Joshua would want was to expose Kelly to someone dealing with a potentially volatile stalker. If she began to feel like it was really an issue, she would tell him and keep her distance until she could resolve it alone. For now, she was content with just ignoring the Anthony sightings.

“What are you doing this weekend?” Joshua asked her later, over dinner.
