Chapter Eleven: “When ‘family’ means more than just by blood…”

“Iliana, wake up. It’s time.”

Aristotle’s voice filtered through her dreams and she opened her eyes, tensing as her heart thundered with surprise. She took precious seconds to ascertain her environment—were they under attack? Had the prisoners gotten free? Was there a sandstorm coming?

Is little Jimmy stuck in the well?

Her last thought made her inwardly giggle and some of her fear faded. She took a deep breath and sat up, scanning the camp. The fire was completely out and the moon still shed a little light on the sands despite its location near the horizon. The wind ruffled the tops of the palm trees, but without much force.

No sandstorm, then.

The students remained asleep either in the wagon or in the sand, though Naomi sat up across the clearing from Iliana and nodded.

“What time is it?” Iliana whispered so Naomi wouldn’t hear her ‘talking to herself.’

“A couple hours before dawn. If you want to be well on your way before another party arrives, you need to leave soon.” Aristotle shook his head like a horse dislodging flies from his ears to get her attention.

“Yeah, okay.” She groaned as she rolled to her feet. “Let me wake the men and we’ll start saddling horses.” She waved at Naomi and gestured for her to meet her at the horses picketed in the trees. “Morning. Can you get started on saddling the horses? We need to get moving.”

Naomi narrowed her eyes. “Right now?”

Iliana nodded. “Yeah. Gut feeling says someone might arrive today, and I’d rather we weren’t here when that happens.”

Her eyes widened. “Yeah, me either. I’ll get started on the horses.”

“Good. I’ll wake Sven and send him to you.”

Waking the boys took some effort. The kidnappers hadn’t let them rest or eat much, and everyone was tired. But she refused to let them lollygag with the threat of new travelers in the back of her mind. Nobutake took over getting the boys packed and in the wagon, particularly Bernie and Toby’s body. Olivier, Guido, Gyurka, Paco, and Ramón rode in the wagon with Bernie. Brandon drove it, while Naomi, Estéban, Sven, Ivan, and Laszlo rode the horses with Nobutake and Iliana. While no one wanted to get moving, they were on their way in under twenty minutes.

Rather than head back to the Sand Lion’s Fang, Aristotle took them northwest into the canyonlands that reminded Iliana of the ruins of Jordan in her world. The canyons didn’t have the temples she was familiar with, but they did have caves painted with pictographs and glyphs. They also provided shelter from the hot sun and a place to rest with seeps where they could water the horses.

“What is this place?” She ran her hand along the wall.

“It’s a long-forgotten set of temples of the nomadic peoples who lived in the Karobis millennia ago. Very few people living today know about it.” Aristotle dropped his head to drink from the seep.

“It’s amazing. I love looking at the pictographs. Are all the caves here filled with them?”

“Most.
