(Her voice is less monotonous compared to Barney’s fiat and vacant tone but she is in a deep trance, as he was.) We’re driving along, and the streets were wide, sun was shining. There were quite a few people in the streets. And I was looking at the houses and stores and windows …

(She speaks, however, with longer pauses, as if she waits for the scene to pass by her eyes before she relates it.) We stopped at a gas station to get directions, and the attendant spoke French and couldn’t understand us. So we went to another garage, and they told us how to get back into the center of Montreal. And I saw a mink coat in the window for $895. Then we decided we’d find a hotel, but then we didn’t know if they’d allow Delsey to be in a hotel. So then we thought we’d look for a motel somewhere outside of Montreal.

And we passed a place with a sign I thought said “potato fritters,”

and the woman in this li ttle drive-in restaurant came out and started J.IO
