Lightweight hackathons. At the top left of this chart, hackathons are closer to innovation exercises than genuine prototyping contests—in the sense that they focus more on the experience and the team-level impact and less on the generation of innovation opportunities. They are fancier, shorter, and the winning superpower for the participants is great storytelling.

Hackathons variants. Bottom left, we group hackathon variants such as custom workshops that might prioritize other outcomes than innovation opportunities or cultural impact—for example, external publicity. These events, although they may still be called “hackathons,” do not necessarily follow the hackathon format, for example, a public “hackathon” aiming to attract talent for a newly founded department in the company.
